When you want to apply for Aadhaar or make changes to your existing Aadhaar details, you must submit supporting documents along with the filled application form. This article provides an easy-to-understand guide on the documents required for Aadhar Card.

Documents required for Aadhar Card

To simplify the process of enrolling or updating your Aadhaar, you no longer need to provide photocopies or self-attested photocopies of your documents. However, it is important to carry the original documents with you when visiting the Aadhaar Seva Kendra for enrolment or updates. These documents will be scanned for verification and returned to you.

For Aadhaar enrolment or update documents play a crucial role. These include identity proof, address proof, proof of date of birth, and proof of relationship documents. To ensure a smooth process, we have compiled a comprehensive list of valid documents required for both Aadhaar update and new enrolment.

So below is the list of the documents from which you can submit one from each category to apply or update Aadhaar.

New Enrolment of Aadhar Supporting Documents Under Age Group 0 to 5 Years

The residential address mentioned in the Head of the Family (HoF) Aadhaar will be used as the address for the Child’s Aadhaar.

For Resident Foreigners, the validity of the Aadhaar card will align with the duration of their VISA. However, in the case of Nepal and Bhutan nationals, the Aadhaar card will remain valid for a period of ten years.

For OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) Card holders, the Aadhaar card issued will have a validity of ten years.

For LTV (Long Term Visa) document holders, the validity of the issued Aadhaar card will align with the validity period of the LTV document.

The Head of the Family (HoF) is encouraged to provide any of the following Proof of Identity (PoI) documents issued in the name of the Child:

  1. Indian Passport
  2. Photo Identity Card/Certificate with photograph issued by Central Govt. /State Govt. like Domicile Certificate, Resident Certificate etc.
  3. ST/ SC/ OBC Certificate issued by Central Govt. /State Govt.
  4. Disability Identity Card/Certificate of Disability issued under Rights of Persons with Disabilities Rules, 2017
  5. Valid OCI Card along with valid Foreign Passport for residents who have stayed in India for 182 days or more in the immediately preceding 12 months
  6. Valid Long Term VISA (LTV) document along with Foreign Passport (valid or expired) of origin country issued to minorities communities of Afghanistan,Bangladesh and Pakistan namely Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians
  7. Valid VISA along with valid Foreign Passport issued to other Resident Foreigners who have stayed in India for 182 days or more in the immediately preceding 12 months

The process of exception handling is conducted under the jurisdiction of UIDAI Regional Offices and is initiated only after careful assessment of the case by the respective Regional Office.

During the process of enrolment or update, it is essential to bring the original documents. Photocopies are not required as the original documents are scanned and promptly returned to the resident.

To be accepted as a valid Proof of Identity (PoI) document, it must contain the resident’s Name and Photograph.

To be accepted as a valid Proof of Address (PoA) document, it must include both the resident’s Name and Address. This ensures that the address proof provided is reliable and accurate.

It is important to note that a document will be considered as a valid Proof of Identity (PoI) and Proof of Address (PoA) only if it contains the resident’s Name, Photograph, and Address. This requirement ensures the credibility and accuracy of the provided identity and address proofs.

It is essential to note that all Proof of Identity (PoI), Proof of Address (PoA), and Proof of Date of Birth (DoB) documents must be issued in the name of the resident. Documents in the name of family members cannot be accepted for the enrolment of other family members.

In situations where a resident does not possess Proof of Identity (PoI) and Proof of Address (PoA) documents, Head of Family (HoF) based enrolment will be utilized. This method is specifically applicable to immediate family members whose names are listed in the Proof of Relationship (PoR) document. During enrolment, the HoF must accompany the resident for their Aadhaar authentication. Furthermore, the address mentioned in the HoF’s Aadhaar will be used for the Aadhaar of other family members. This ensures consistency and coherence within the family’s Aadhaar records.

The CERTIFICATE FOR AADHAAR ENROLMENT/ UPDATE format is applicable for POI documents at SI. Nos. 17, 20, 21, 22, 31 & 32; POA documents at SI. Nos. 23, 24, 37, 38, 44 & 45; POR documents at SI. Nos. 13 & 14 DOB documents at SI. Nos. 4, 5, 14 & 15 of Schedule II of the Aadhaar (Enrolment and Update) Regulations, 2016, as amended from time to time

Is Head of the Family (HoF) based enrolment mandatory for children?

Yes, Children below 5 years of age are required to have Head of the Family (HoF) based enrolment, except for those living in shelter homes or orphanages. In such cases, either parent can take on the role of HoF.

Is it necessary for the Head of the Family (HoF) to have a valid Aadhaar for HoF based enrolment?

Are the Aadhaar numbers of both parents required for HoF based enrolment? Is biometric authentication by one of the parents mandatory?

      There used to be option to change date of birth online on UIDAI Portal, but now that option has been officially revoked by UIDAI. So to change your DOB you will have to visit Aadhaar Center by taking along supported documents.
